Some people still remember the drab parking area that resulted from the demolition of the Asile de la Providence, brought down to make way for the metro’s underground concourse. Established in 1992 to mark Montreal’s 350th anniversary, Place Émilie-Gamelin today resonates with cultural and citizen activity and serves as a refuge for society’s outcasts. Bernard Vallée, explorer of Montreal’s urban history for the past 35 years, will walk you through more than 200 years of the site’s evolution as well as that of its surroundings: inspired by ATSA’s installations, he will evoke characters, institutions and events that left their imprint on the city, from the apple orchards belonging to the wealthy French-Canadian bourgeoisie to today’s landscaped square.

MANU MILITARI

Manu Militari is a passionate and socially engaged artist who casts an incisive look at the world around him. His writing, as impactful and jarring as a punch in the gut, is his stock in trade. His show is free of artifice and special effects. Backed with a DJ and two hype men, in the pure hip hop tradition, his weapons of mass seduction are his words and a solid beat.

Moran’s world is reflected in his lyrics, which impress with their refinement, precision and depth. Poetic and sensitive, he will play material from his third and latest recording, accompanied by musical friends guitarist Thomas Carbou and drummer Sly Coulombe!

In 2005, three friends formed the troupe Les Pelleteux de Légendes and, together with two other friends, put together a show and took it on a memorable road trip through Brittany. Today, they gather together to bring tales to life. Paul Bradley, Eveline Ménard and Isabelle St-Pierre are three singular voices with the ability to make the listener time-travel : from Montreal’s former Faubourg à m'lasse neighbourhood and the unconventional life of Sister Émilie Gamelin, a remarkable but forgotten woman, to tales of wisdom from the Middle East, with a dash of topicality courtesy of Québec’s maple spring; from stories of beggars and urban myths to realistic poems describing everyday life and the daily struggles for identity. A date with History and, above all, with some fabulous storytelling.

Caserne 18-30 is proud to be associated with ATSA for an 8th consecutive year, as part of Fin Novembre! Specialists of the circus arts, Caserne 18-30 provides a free training facility for professional and semi-professional circus artists. It thereby enables local and foreign artists to develop and hone their skills through interaction with their peers, in a friendly atmosphere and affordably. It is in keeping with this spirit of community that some members of Caserne 18-30’s circus unit participate in three important social outreach events each year: the Nuit des sans abri, Fin Novembre and the Marche 2/3!
Once again this year, Caserne 18-30’s artists will put on 4 circus shows, on November 16 and 17. Artists Pancho Sandoval, Franklin Luy, Miguel Jalaff, David Louch, Marina Salonga, Éliane Bonin, Catherine Desjardins-Béland and Isabelle Michon-Campbell will give audiences an eyeful and a thrill with their dynamic and colourful performances featuring juggling, acrobatics, hand-to-hand acrobatics, balancing acts, flame throwing and much, much more! Not to be missed!

L'artiste engagé, l'urbanité d'hier à aujourd'hui.
Esther Trépanier, Francine Couture and Ève Lamoureux are three UQAM art history professors who share a passion for urban art and citizen activism. Their conference will focus on activist art within the city, from the turn of the 20th century to the present.
