Sylvie Cotton

Sylvie Cotton is an interdisciplinary artist whose projects have long expressed two central themes: the creation of a self-referencing situation before another person, and the implementation of an interaction with this other. This approach results in a series of works encapsulated under the binary title Mon corps mon atelier / Mon corps ton atelier (“My body my workshop/My body your workshop”). For some years now, the artist has been incorporating the other as well as some of the other’s stories, markings, identity and desires. After tattoos, birth marks and beauty spots, Sylvie Cotton offers the État d’Urgence more intermingling of bodies, this time exploring the scar.

Stefan St-Laurent

Stefan St-Laurent was born in Moncton, New Brunswick in 1974 and has a Bachelor of Media Arts from Toronto’s Ryerson University. His performance and video work has been shown in numerous galleries and museums throughout Canada and abroad. He offers his performance piece The Only Good Way to Hug Another Male in Public, which involves his being carried by a strong man as though he were wounded, unconscious or dead. While this piece employs some aspects of relational esthetics, Stefan is more interested in creating events which are not seen by the public as being art per se. The piece will be adapted for Montreal’s État d’Urgence, the ideal place to save a man!
